-
- -----Baseball
-
- [BASEBALL]
- BaseBall (Yuma, Russell J.; $15) is played just like the real game with
- pitching, hitting, stealing bases - all done with ASCII (text) characters.
- Features include three levels of skill, extra-inning games and scoreboard.
- A font editor is used to create players that look more like tiny players.
- Requires EGA or VGA.
-
- [LD6]
- LineDrive Fantasy Baseball 6.12 (Maranatha Custom Software; $35) allows you
- to become owner, general manager, manager, and chief scout of your very own
- team made up of major league stars. It will keep track of rosters, player
- trades, free agent signings, league standings, and the league's prize fund.
- A league newsletter can also be printed. If you have not heard of Fantasy
- Baseball, it is a multi-person game in which each participant owns a team
- and drafts actual players to be on their team. Team results are based on
- the actual game statistics of the players in real games.
-
- [SIMBASE]
- Simbase (Smith, Philip; $50) will simulate baseball games for serious
- analysts. It is not a game. It is intended as a tool for analyzing the
- value of a particular player or a group of players to the team over the
- course of one or more full seasons. It provides a framework within which
- you can forecast the likely outcome for a full baseball season. You can use
- the program to help you assess current or historical win-loss records in
- the major leagues, or you can use it to help improve the prospects of your
- own local team. Play probabilities reflect statistics for individual
- caught-stealing, wild pitch and balk records.
-
- [WP10]
- Wild Pitch 1.04 (Michael Savage; $25) is a text-based baseball simulation
- that allows you to test your skills as a big league skipper. Select
- lineups, pitchers, steal bases, hit and run, etc. View your stats at any
- time.
-
-
- -----Basketball
-
- [FB3]
- FastBreak Fantasy Basketball 3.04 (Frawley, R.M.; $35) allows you to run a
- fantasy basketball team of sport professionals from the NBA, NCAA or local
- recreational leagues. It will keep track of player draft, 18-player team
- rosters, starting lineups, player contracts, fees and fines, league
- standings based on eight categories and a prize fund. You can also print
- out a league newsletter. This is a multi-player game in which each
- participant forms his own team. It can be set up to play just for fun or
- for cash prizes. Team results are based on the actual game statistics of
- players in real games. Requires 720K of disk space and a color monitor.
-
-
- -----Fishing
-
- [BASSCLAS]
- Bass Class 1.8 (Olsen, Richard A. ASP; $15) is a fishing game and tutorial
- that is both educational and fun to play. It has excellent animated
- graphics, a built-in glossary of fishing terms, mouse support, and three
- skill levels. Requires EGA and at least 512K of RAM.
-
- [BASSTOUR]
- BassTour 4.9 (Olsen, Richard A. ASP; $17) is a fishing tournament game in
- which you have complete control of a fully rigged bass boat. You control
- where it goes, and how it gets there. Your bass boat has all of the latest
- accessories, including a trolling motor, a 5 speed outboard motor, LCD
- chart recorder, a rod box containing six different fishing rods, and a
- fully stocked tackle box we would all be proud to own. Save and Restore
- games, and keep records of the largest fish caught. The object of the game
- is to catch the heaviest five fish limit on each of three days of the
- tournament. The fisherman with the highest total weight wins the
- tournament. This looks like a great game for the fishing enthusiast. It
- even has mosquitoes to harass the fisherman (thanks a lot!).
-
- [BASSDUEL]
- BassDuel 1.21 (Olsen, Richard A. ASP; $17) is a two-player fishing
- tournament game. This game contains all the great features of the popular
- BassTour game and more. It has six new areas to fish that are BassTour and
- Bass Class compatible. Supports a mouse and a joystick. Requires 512K and
- EGA.
-
-
- -----Football
-
- [CUNNING]
- Cunning FootBall (Cunningham, Cass; $25) is a football game you play
- against the computer. This is the best football game or simulation that we
- have seen. While others may let you select plays but allow you no control
- over how the plays are executed; some do not even graphically display the
- action. CF lets you choose from a large selection of plays (including
- punts, kickoffs, and fumbles), displays actions and sounds, and lets you
- control key players. Mouse and joystick are supported but not required.
-
- [Defense]
- Defense (Lee, Fred; $45) is a computerized football game that gives you
- more control than similar games. You do the tackling, blocking, passes,
- runs, draw plays, field goals, sacks, interceptions, fumbles, and so on. It
- demands skill and quick reflexes. It can be played by up to four players or
- against the computer. The documentation refers to a practice game, which
- the author did not include, but which really isn't necessary if you read
- the documentation first. The program may not run on some machines. Requires
- 500K of free memory. Supports a mouse and joystick.
-
- [FIELDGEN]
- Field General (Markert, Rodney B. ASP; $24) is a football game in which you
- play the computer or another player. Playing consists of calling the plays.
- Unlike Cunning Football (#1428), you have no control over the players while
- the play is taking place. You can play with either NFL or WLAF rules. An
- interesting feature is the "chalkboard" that shows how each of the football
- players move on every play. There are an abundance of game elements which
- can be controlled by the user. You can fake punts, fake field goals, and
- there are kickoff and receiving options, an instant replay feature, and
- extensive play descriptions. Requires a hard disk or 720k+ floppy and 512k
- RAM.
-
- [FootBall]
- FootBall (Rankin, Pat and Day, Don; $10) is a database of college football
- games from 1933 through 1986 and includes a fast look-up utility.
- Information in the database includes, year, team, leading players,
- conference winners, bowl game winners, Hall of Fame members, coach of the
- year and more.
-
- [FBSCORES]
- FootBall Scoreboard ($20) gives you access to the results of more than 4200
- NFL games - regular season, wildcard, playoff, championship and Super Bowl
- - played since 1970. It will give you almost unlimited flexibility in how
- you can look at the game results. You can print reports over a range of
- years, for specific teams, conferences and divisions and more. This is a
- must for all serious football fans.
-
- [1ST35]
- 1st & Goal Fantasy Football 3.05 (Frawley, R.M.; $35) allows you to run a
- fantasy football league based on the NFL, NCAA, or the CFL. It will run
- your player draft, keep track of your league's rosters, calculate your
- standings based on any or all of 12 statistics of your choice, print your
- league newsletter and keep track of your prize fund. It can be played for
- cash prizes or just for fun and can be set up to pay out weekly prizes
- based on team performance during the previous week as opposed to season
- total performance.
-
- [FFA]
- Fantasy Football Assistant 2.1 (Muellenberg, Daryl; $25) helps "fantasy
- football league" commissioners automate record keeping involved with
- running a league. It supports up to 8 teams with up to 22 players each.
- Reports include team rosters, weekly results, and standings. Many options
- are availiable, such as division support, scoring methods (basic,
- performance, or distance), starting lineup, and more. Standings can be
- reprinted without executing the update.
-
- [NFL_AID]
- NFL-Aid (Competitive Edge Software; $20) contains statistics from the last
- 3000+ NFL games intended to help in handicapping NFL football games. It
- provides five screens of information, including Win/Loss/Tie summaries,
- average points scored, head-to-head results, a recap screen with all of the
- previous games that have been reviewed, a computer pick with game results,
- and a current standings screen.
-
- [PFE]
- Pro Football Edge! 93 2.0 is a NFL handicapping program for NFL Winners and
- Over/Unders.
-
-
- -----Golf
-
- ** Also see GAME_MGT for golf related programs.
-
- [CADDY]
- Computer Caddy (Pliable Products; $25) is a database for keeping track of
- statistics on your golf game, including improvement rating, consistency
- rating, handicap, putting percentage, average on par 3, 4, and 5 holes, and
- more. It can tabulate scores from rounds within a range of dates and
- provide statistics that point out weaknesses. The program supports up to 20
- golfers, 10,000 golf courses and 10,000 rounds of golf per player.
-
- [CAD_HACK]
- CaddieHack (MICODE Developments; $15-$24) is a golf game that comes in two
- versions, one for EGA/VGA and the other for CGA. The graphics are detailed,
- colorful, and fast. Club swing and control are identical to Mean-18's,
- although the distances for club selected do not seem as accurate to us.
-
- [MIC_GOLF]
- Micro Golf (Milsoft; $0) is a miniature golf game with three courses. It is
- a much more sophisticated game than Poko Memorial Miniature Golf, below,
- but Poko seems to require more skill, perhaps because you are forced to
- play more bank shots. Also, on our 386, the movement of the ball was too
- fast to be seen.
-
- [MIN_GOLF]
- Poko Memorial ($0) is a two-course miniature golf game. The graphics are
- very crude, but the game is fun to play. Both this and Micro Golf allow
- multiple players.
-
- [PRO_GOLF]
- PC Pro-Golf (CMA Software; $20) is a color graphics golf game in which the
- user may select clubs, direction and force of swing. The force of swing is
- selected in advance and you have no real-time control over the actual
- swing. Nevertheless, the game is entertaining and the graphics are good,
- with water, sand, woods, buildings, roads, out-of-bounds areas and more.
-
- [PERSNPRO]
- Personal Pro for Golf (Software Development Productivity, Inc.; $27) helps
- analyze and improve your golf swing.
-
- [TEEDOFF]
- Teed-Off (Hendricks, Kevin; $0) is a golf game. The graphics are crude, but
- the play of the game is still entertaining and control of the club swing is
- similar to the retail golf games.
-
-
- -----Hockey
-
- [BALL]
- Ball (Galifir Developments; $10) is a computer hockey game in which you can
- play the computer or a friend, play a league or let the computer play
- itself - all as any two of a dozen different teams with different
- characteristics. It took a few tries just to understand the options at the
- beginning, but once we got going, it was a fun and challenging game.
-
- [HOCKEY]
- Solar Hockey League 1.1 (Sports; Galifir Developments; $10) is a hockey
- game with fast, smooth action. You can play against a friend, your choice
- of computer teams, or try to win the Solar Hockey League itself. Each side
- controls three men. You can pass and run with the disc (puck), but if you
- hold onto it too long, the opponent can steal it away.
-
-
- -----Soccer
-
- [GOAL]
- Goal (Wizard Games; $25) takes you right into the heart of soccer team
- management. You can select a squad of 20 players from any of 128 countries.
- Tactical options are covered with great detail. You can adjust your
- players' positioning and tactics from minute to minute in response to every
- threat from your opponents. You'll have to cope with injuries, suspensions,
- fluctuating player fitness and confidence. You are provided with a detailed
- analysis of each player and team, as you press on to the World Cup
- playoffs. This is a very interesting simulation. The program comes to us
- from Scotland.
-
- [SOCCER]
- Soccer Game (New Era Software; $20) challenges you to become a successful
- manager of a soccer team. You start with a fourth-division team and work
- your way up. The only way to move up is to do such a good job that when
- your contract expires, a better team will offer you a better contract. If
- you have done poorly, none of the teams will want you and the game is over.
- The game uses a database of 1270 players, 100 teams, 100 treasurers, 100
- scouts, 100 physiotherapists, 100 managers, 100 assistant managers. The
- program does not allow you to save and recall games, which is a major
- nuisance. At least one of the screens was written with flashing text, which
- is a minor nuisance. Otherwise, this is a well-written, very full-featured
- program.
